Off-contract Cowboys half Ray Thompson could be forced into an early retirement by a degenerative knee condition, according to an AAP report.
Thompson has filled an important role in recent seasons, providing valuable cover in the halves and at hooker, particularly around Origin time. However, he’s reportedly no longer able to train early in the week, and his condition is only expected to get worse.
“Everything is a bit up in the air,” Thompson said. “It’s all subject to how I feel at the end of the year, whether the Cowboys can keep me here and if my knee lets me play on.”
To their credit, the Cowboys have done a good job of reducing his workload in recent years, by replacing him in the team with Jake Granville.
Thompson has played 109 matches for the Cowboys since his debut in 2009, and played 4 Tests for Papua New Guinea.
He’s #93 on The Obstruction Rule’s Free Agent Top 100.
