Cowboys five-eighth Michael Morgan? He’s there. Storm pivot Cameron Munster? He’s there, too. In all, Maroons coach Kevin Walters has listed four players as possibilities to replace the injured Johnathan Thurston for Origin 3, though he’s notably forgotten one former Maroon – Sea Eagles halfback Daly Cherry-Evans.
According to 7 Sport, Walters listed the front-runners on NRL 360.
“Michael Morgan would be an option for us,” Walters said. “Munster was 18th man, so he’d be another one for us.”
“Corey Norman has been playing well for Parramatta, so those sorts of guys. Moses Mbye is another who could possibly come into the picture, so we have some options there; but there’s only one little Johnny”.
For what it’s worth, we doubt that this is any real reflection on how Cherry-Evans is viewed by Maroons selectors – just two months ago, Walters himself declared the Manly halfback the ‘top seed‘ to replace Cooper Cronk once he retires from representative football.
More likely, he just named the first few sixes who popped into his head.
Maroons selector Darren Lockyer meanwhile, has nominated Morgan as his “frontrunner“, according to WWOS; while Maroons legend Wally Lewis prefers Munster.
For the record, we agree with Wally. We’d pick Munster.
