Is a contract not worth anything any more?
Despite being under contract until the end of 2020, Panthers forward Leilani Latu is rumoured to be looking for the exit door, with his management supposedly holding “secret negotiations” with the Knights and Warriors.
According to a WWOS report, the Panthers prop is said to be unhappy with the club’s “recent troubles”, referring to their inconsistent performances (if Latu is indeed unhappy with losing, the Knights and Warriors are certainly interesting choices as potential destinations).
Despite being at best the fourth-string middle forward at the Panthers, Latu would be an instant upgrade over anyone at either the Warriors or Knights, and you’d expect they’d both be willing to pay handsomely for a player of his calibre.
Assuming that the report of his management entering negotiations is accurate, it can be assumed that he’s been given permission by the Panthers, in which case a release might not be far away.
The report also suggests that Panthers utility Tyrone Peachey is in demand from rival clubs, however at this stage, his release looks less likely.
Latu has made 46 appearances for the Panthers, and played 1 Test for Tonga.
