UPDATE 13/7 @ 2:20pm: The Sharks have this afternoon confirmed the signing of Gray on a two-year deal.
Aaron Gray didn’t say no.
According to 7Sport, the Sharks have agreed to terms with Rabbitohs centre Aaron Gray on a two-year deal.
The recruitment of Gray had been speculated for 2 months, since Gray said that if the Sharks came knocking, he “wouldn’t say no“.
However, he won’t be replacing centre Ricky Leutele in the Sharks backline. Leutele had been expected to be granted a release in order to join the Titans next year. However, the report states that after Jarryd Hayne activated his 2018 option and the club signed Dale Copley, the Titans were no longer able to come up with a competitive offer. As a result, Leutele appears set to see out his contract at Cronulla.
It remains to be seen how the Sharks will fit them all in, with the report speculating that they could play Dugan at fullback, Holmes on the wing and Gray at centre; though they could just as easily play Holmes at the back, Dugan at centre, with Gray on the wing.
The competition for spots in the Sharks backline will no doubt be one of the stories of the 2018 pre-season.
Gray has played 39 first grade games for the Rabbitohs since his debut in 2015.
