Bennett confirms Ese’ese Knights deal

July 14, 2017, 12:44 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Well this is awkward.

Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has reportedly broken from rugby league convention, and revealed that Broncos forward Herman Ese’ese will depart the club at season’s end to join the Knights. Bennett’s announcement was reported by nrl.com Brisbane correspondent Eden Richards.

The confirmation from Bennett is odd for two reasons.

Firstly, it was the Broncos who lodged a complaint to the NRL in April against the Sharks for (wait for it) announcing the Broncos’ Jack Bird signing before Brisbane did. To now turn around and do the same thing to the Knights is hypocrisy of the highest order.

Secondly, the Broncos are playing the Knights this weekend. The Knights made a point of not commenting on the expected signings of Ese’ese and Tautau Moga when asked earlier in the week, as a matter of courtesy to their upcoming opponent. Apparently that respect isn’t mutual.

Regardless, the signing, which has been expected for several weeks now, will be a huge boost for the Knights, who currently boast the league’s worst forward pack.

In conjuction with the recruitment of Kalyn Ponga, Shaun Kenny-Dowall and the expected signing of Tautau Moga, there’s reason for Knights fans to believe that the arrow is finally pointing up.

Ese’ese has played 23 first grade games for the Broncos, and 1 Test for Samoa.
