With Titans utility Tyrone Roberts still yet to commit to the Gold Coast for 2018, it was only a matter of time before another NRL club came sniffing around to try and pry him away. As it turns out, the Tigers may be that team.
According to Fox Sports, the Tigers are “considering making a play” for Roberts, reportedly viewing him as the perfect bench utility.
Whether or not their eventual offer would be enough to lure him from the Titans remains to be seen – he’s already had an offer to remain on the Gold Coast as a utility on the table since June, and has reportedly been holding out in the hope of being offered a starting gig somewhere. Unless the money is substantially better, you’d imagine he might as well stay where he is if the role is the same (though admittedly, if he fancies himself a chance of unseating a member of the Tigers spine, you couldn’t blame him).
It remains surprising to us that nobody has yet been willing to offer Roberts a starting spot in the halves (he’d be an immediate upgrade at the Warriors or Knights, for example), but if nothing else, the Tigers’ interest should at least improve his leverage.
Roberts has played 134 first grade games for the Titans and Knights.
