With the season winding down and roster spots rapidly filling up, several of the Knights’ off-contract players have already begun seeking new homes for 2018. But don’t count back-rower Luke Yates among them.
According to the Newcastle Herald, Yates’ management has already held preliminary talks with the club, and he remains hopeful of securing a contract there for next year.
“Luke definitely wants to stay,” said Yates’ manager, Steve Gillis. “He’s worked his bum off to play first grade for the Knights and that’s all he’s ever wanted to do, since he was a little kid.”
“But if we can’t come to terms, he’ll have to think outside the square and I’m sure there will be plenty of other clubs who know who he is now.”
“But his preference is to stay in Newcastle, and hopefully that’s what happens.”
We’re not sure exactly what the Knights are looking for in their back-rowers, but if it’s toughness, Yates has it in spades – he’s been playing with a ruptured AC joint for a month.
He seems like a good style of a kid, and we hope he gets rewarded with a new deal.
Yates has played 16 first grade games for the Knights since making his debut in Round 1.
