If Sharks five-eighth James Maloney is going to secure a release from his contract, the Sharks first need to find a suitable replacement. They’ve already been linked to off-contract Storm half Cooper Cronk, as well as a switcheroo with the Rabbitohs for Cody Walker. Now, Raiders halfback Aidan Sezer is the latest NRL half to be linked to Cronulla.
According to SMH, the Raiders are believed to be one of the clubs over the projected $9.2 million salary cap, and if it’s ratified, they’re expected to need to shed playing talent in order to become cap compliant. Enter the Sharks.
In the event that Sezer were then to become available, it’s expected that the Sharks would make a play for the Raiders’ halfback, in order to facilitate the release of Maloney.
To be quite honest, that’s a lot of moving pieces, and we’d be surprised if all of the stars aligned successfully for a Sezer-to-Cronulla move to eventuate; but admittedly, stranger things have happened. If nothing else, it may be something to keep an eye on in the event that the Raiders do wind up having to shed salary.
Sezer has played 114 first grade games for the Raiders and Titans.
