While the Knights are clearly in no hurry to re-sign many of their off-contract players, preferring instead to save their money and roster spots for potential imports; they have identified one off-contract player they’d love to keep – second-rower Lachlan Fitzgibbon.
According to the Newcastle Herald, Fitzgibbon has been identified a “priority signing” for the Knights (possibly the only priority among their current crop), after a string of impressive performances over the past two months.
“We’d love to keep Fitzy, to be honest with you,” said Knights coach Nathan Brown. “We’ve got an offer out there for Fitzy.”
“These things obviously don’t always happen quickly, but he’s obviously a player out of the ones who are off contract that we’ve put an offer to, and we’d love to have him around.”
The Knights have a stack of salary cap space, and plenty of spots available on their roster, with a host of current players off-contract, and few more likely to be re-signed.
If they wish to keep the Newcastle junior, they’re certainly well placed to make a competitive offer.
Fitzgibbon has played 16 first grade games for the Knights, since his debut in 2015.
