Apparently unhappy at the Sharks, rumours have been swirling about the future of Sharks winger Valentine Holmes. Now, Fox Sports reporter James Hooper has given his opinion on the rumours linking Holmes to the Cowboys, saying that “where there’s smoke, there’s fire“.
“(The rumours) have been around for a long time,” Hooper wrote on his Fox Sports Live Blog. “He’s from up that way in Queensland originally.”
“I’d say where there’s smoke there’s fire.”
It’s easy to join the dots and see how the rumour makes sense. Though Holmes only just signed a two-year extension early last year, he was at the time viewed as a fullback; and as a result, was paid accordingly (reports suggested his deal to be worth roughly $1.7 million over 2018/19). So, if Holmes were so unhappy as to eventually request a release, there’s a good chance the Sharks would grant it, rather than continue to pay north of $800,000 per season for a winger (an excellent winger, mind you; but a winger nonetheless).
Meanwhile, Cowboys fullback Lachlan Coote is off-contract at the end of this season, and is no guarantee of staying put, having taken less than his market worth on his previous deal. Should Coote sign elsewhere, the Cowboys would likely be in the market for a fullback, and voila, Holmes might be a perfect fit.
Obviously, this is all rumour and speculation at this point, but in light of Hooper’s comments (he doesn’t get a lot wrong), it seems to fall into the category of “watch this space”.
