Storm prop Tim Glasby visited the Knights over the weekend, strengthening speculation that the Origin prop is set to link with Newcastle. There’s still some way to go before a deal is over the line though, and the Knights aren’t the only team interested.
According to Newcastle Herald reporter Barry Toohey on twitter, the Raiders and Panthers are reportedly interested in Glasby as well, in addition to Glasby’s current club, the Storm.
In response to a tweet inferring that Glasby’s signing could be imminent, Toohey responded: “Very early days mate. Raiders, Penrith and Storm all keen.”
That said, if those are the options, you’d have to fancy the Knights are in the box seat if they want him badly enough. In addition to having the most cap space, the Knights also have the biggest need at the position, presumably making Glasby more valuable to them than their competition.
It’s hard to see exactly where Glasby would fit in the Panthers’ star-studded pack; at Canberra – although he’d make an excellent replacement for the possible departure of Junior Paulo – their salary cap situation is known to be tight; and Melbourne, meanwhile, are facing a fight to retain both Glasby and Nelson Asofa-Solomona long-term.
Still, it’s interesting that a Glasby move to Newcastle isn’t a forgone conclusion. Not yet, at least.
Glasby has played 92 first grade games for the Storm, and 2 Origins for Queensland.
