You can never have too many NRL halves. Especially ones that also play prop.
Fox Sports is reporting that the Gold Coast club is chasing Cowboys forward John Asiata, the man dubbed “Fat Johnathan Thurston” after filling in admirably for the Maroons legend while he’s been absent with a calf injury.
The Titans are said to be preparing to offer Asiata a three-year-deal to relocate to the Gold Coast in 2018.
Given the struggles that the Cowboys have endured in the forwards this year with former regular forwards Matt Scott (ACL), James Tamou (Penrith) and Ben Hannant (retirement), we’d be surprised if the Cowboys don’t put up a fight to keep the versatile bench forward.
But in a climate where players like Aaron Woods and Josh Reynolds are swapping clubs, nothing would surprise us any more.
Asiata has made 58 appearances for the Cowboys, including 2 in the halves. He’s also played a single Test for Samoa.
