Cartwright tipped for Sea Eagles gig

August 29, 2018, 11:27 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Well if John Cartwright doesn’t rate the Sea Eagles’ working conditions, he can’t claim he didn’t know beforehand.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Sea Eagles assistant coach John Cartwright is expected to be appointed head coach of the club, when Trent Barrett moves on at the end of the season.

Cartwright is apparently popular with the playing group, and – having only recently signed a two-year extension – is probably the most cost-efficient option, too.

The report indicates that Cartwright was preferred over a list of candidates including Michael Maguire, Neil Henry and (welp!) Tim Sheens.

Cartwright has coached 192 first grade games for the Titans, with a career winning percentage of 45.3%.

Gosiewski staying at Manly

August 22, 2018, 8:00 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Not a lot seems to be going right for the Sea Eagles at the moment, but it seems they’ve quietly managed one good decision.

According to nrl.com, the Sea Eagles recently re-signed forward Jack Gosiewski for another 12 months, keeping him on the beaches until the end of 2019.

In a pretty dire year for Manly, Gosiewski looked like a decent find before his season was disrupted by injury. With another year at Manly, he’ll have every opportunity to cement a starting spot in the second row.

Gosiewski has played 12 first grade games for the Sea Eagles and Rabbitohs.

Maguire tipped for Sea Eagles gig

August 15, 2018, 8:48 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Trent Barrett‘s seat isn’t even cold yet, but that doesn’t mean that plans aren’t afoot to appoint his replacement.

According to Fox Sports, former Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire is expected to be appointed Manly’s next head coach, whenever Barrett’s resignation is officially confirmed.

The report suggests that Maguire – who’s currently working as head coach of the Kiwis – is “all but guaranteed” to land the job.

Given that Maguire’s previous NRL head coaching experience came at the Rabbitohs – one of the game’s most professional clubs – it’ll be interesting to see how he finds the working conditions that Barrett found unacceptable.

Maguire has coached 153 NRL games for the Rabbitohs, with a career winning percentage of 55.6%.

Barrett to leave Sea Eagles

August 14, 2018, 7:22 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Though his exit has yet to be officially confirmed; if reports are accurate that the Sea Eagles are making inquiries about a replacement for coach Trent Barrett, then his departure is surely on the cards.

That’s exactly what’s being reported by the Daily Telegraph, who’ve stated that Barrett has already handed in his resignation, and at this point he’s just serving out his notice.

If true, it doesn’t reflect well on the Sea Eagles, with Barrett reportedly leaving due to a lack of resources in the football club. If Manly aren’t providing Barrett with the support he needs to be successful, it’s difficult to imagine that conditions would be any different for the next guy – leaving the Sea Eagles potentially at risk of becoming a second-class team in a top-flight competition.

The Sea Eagles have previously stated that they intend to sit down with Barrett post-season and work through the issues, but it seems that that ship may have already sailed.

Sea Eagles targeting Cartwright

July 4, 2018, 7:23 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

The Bryce Cartwright era may already be over on the Gold Coast (did it ever really begin?).

According to 7Sport reporter Chris Garry on twitter, Cartwright is “poised to join Manly Sea Eagles”, with the Sea Eagles having made a formal approach, and the Titans reportedly happy for him to go there.

Cartwright had been languishing in Queensland Cup due to poor defense (surely they knew what they were buying at the time), and is currently out with a broken hand; but prior to his arrival on the Gold Coast was perceived as one of the league’s most explosive attacking weapons.

The Sea Eagles will be hoping they can get the best out of him, and as long as he’s not forced to defend on the edges, he may turn out to be a bargain. Only time will tell.

Cartwright has played 80 first grade games for the Titans and Panthers.
