The Sea Eagles’ plan to get the salaries of Brett Stewart and Steve Matai wiped off their books has been unsuccessful, with the NRL denying their application for salary cap dispensation, according to Fox Sports.
Their submission for Stewart has been officially rejected, while the Matai submission is considered “buckley’s chance” of being approved.
That means that the Sea Eagles will have to carry the pair’s combined $1.2 million in 2017 salary on their books.
Had they been approved, the Sea Eagles could have brought forward some 2018 salaries into this season, and effectively cleared extra space for next year. However, that won’t be the case, and the Sea Eagles will have to deal with the same 2018 salary cap as everyone else (whatever that turns out to be).
