Tigers to sign Matterson

September 6, 2018, 12:12 pm By Joel 2 Comments

The first year of the Tigers’ rebuild went a lot better than most expected, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.

Signing a young, highly regarded edge forward will be a huge step in the right direction, and that’s reportedly what they’ve done.

According to WWOS reporter The Mole, Wests have won the race to secure upcoming Roosters second-rower Ryan Matterson, who’s said to be “poised to sign a two-year deal”.

The nephew of Broncos legend Terry Matterson, Ryan will not only add a bit of starch out wide, but also adds utility value, having also played in the centres and halves during his time in the top grade.

Matterson has played 57 first grade games for the Roosters.

Pangai Jr to Knights back on?

August 31, 2018, 10:57 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

It’s well established that the Knights were aggressively pursuing boom Broncos forward Tevita Pangai Jr earlier in the season, but that pursuit appeared to go cold after following reports he’d be signing a two-year extension with Brisbane.

That pursuit seems to be heating back up.

According to the Newcastle Herald, Pangai Jr this week met with Knights officials for contract negotiations, in a sign that his retention by the Broncos is a long way short of a slam dunk.

For what it’s worth, the Roosters are also said to be interested, and local beat writer Barry Toohey has said on twitter that he still considers the Broncos a “slight favourite“, but nonetheless, if he’s bothering to visit Newcastle, they must be in with a serious shot.

Pangai Jr has played 52 first grade games for the Broncos, and 3 Tests for Tonga.

Nuuausala announces retirement

August 22, 2018, 7:53 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

In a quiet week of NRL news, we thought we might get through 7 days without another retirement, but alas, it wasn’t to be.

Roosters forward Frank-Paul Nuuausala today announced his retirement at season’s end, after a career spanning 12 years.

Nuuausala played 186 first grade games for the Roosters and Raiders, and 14 Tests for New Zealand.

Roosters reportedly get Morris, too

July 20, 2018, 8:22 am By Joel Leave a Comment

If Ryan Hall doesn’t work out, the Roosters will have a pretty good backup plan.

According to WWOS reporter The Mole, the Roosters have agreed to terms with another representative winger, this time adding Bulldogs winger Brett Morris.

Where exactly be fits (and how they can afford him) is anyone’s guess, as they now have three Test wingers on the books for 2019: Morris, Hall and Daniel Tupou.

Regardless, it’s surely a good problem to have.

Morris has played 230 first grade games for the Bulldogs and Dragons, 15 Origins for New South Wales, and 18 Tests for Australia.

Roosters sign Hall

July 19, 2018, 11:07 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Having lost a former Test winger next year in Blake Ferguson, the Roosters haven’t aimed low in finding his replacement.

The club today announced the signing of English international Ryan Hall for next season, on a two-year deal that will see the winger head to Bondi until the end of 2020.

Though he may be anonymous to NRL fans who are ignorant of the English game, we can tell you that he’s big, he’s powerful, and he’s accomplished pretty much everything the Super League has to offer.

Whether that translates to the NRL remains to be seen, but he’s about as well placed as anyone for success.

Hall has made 313 appearances for Leeds, and 32 Tests for England.
