Dragons, Titans chasing Oates

September 13, 2018, 10:39 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

It’s somewhat unusual these days for a representative star to finish his contract without his next one lined up, but that’s exactly what Corey Oates has done.

With the Broncos eliminated, Oates now must turn his attention to where he’ll play in 2019, and it’s looking decreasing likely that it’ll be in Brisbane.

According to the Courier-Mail, Oates has confirmed that he’s received interest from the Dragons and Titans, while adding that he “wouldn’t want to re-sign with the Broncs of Wayne’s not there”.

With coach Wayne Bennett no certainty to return next year, that naturally brings Oates’ future at the club into question.

If there’s a positive for the Broncos, it’s that Bennett’s future may not be clarified for some time, but Oates will surely want to sign a contract sooner rather than later. If he stays on the assumption that Bennett will remain, then what Bennett ultimately does is probably irrelevant.

Oates has played 120 first grade games for the Broncos, and 5 Origins for Queensland.

Pangai Jr to Knights back on?

August 31, 2018, 10:57 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

It’s well established that the Knights were aggressively pursuing boom Broncos forward Tevita Pangai Jr earlier in the season, but that pursuit appeared to go cold after following reports he’d be signing a two-year extension with Brisbane.

That pursuit seems to be heating back up.

According to the Newcastle Herald, Pangai Jr this week met with Knights officials for contract negotiations, in a sign that his retention by the Broncos is a long way short of a slam dunk.

For what it’s worth, the Roosters are also said to be interested, and local beat writer Barry Toohey has said on twitter that he still considers the Broncos a “slight favourite“, but nonetheless, if he’s bothering to visit Newcastle, they must be in with a serious shot.

Pangai Jr has played 52 first grade games for the Broncos, and 3 Tests for Tonga.

Cowboys reportedly getting Opacic, too

August 30, 2018, 6:42 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

The Cowboys are shaping up to have a new-look backline in 2019, with long-time stars Johnathan Thurston, Lachlan Coote and Antonio Winterstein on their way out, and Ben Barba reportedly on his way in.

Barba may well be joined at North Queensland by Broncos centre Tom Opacic, who’s been granted a release from his recently signed extension with Brisbane in order to take up a deal with the Cowboys, according to WWOS reporter The Mole.

The report states that the signing is unlikely to be formally announced until after this weekend’s games, at the earliest.

Opacic has played 19 first grade games for the Broncos.

Broncos getting Seibold, unless they’re not

August 16, 2018, 4:31 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Sometimes, the mainstream media is total agreement about what’s going on (like Trent Barrett quitting the Sea Eagles). Other times, competing journalists release conflicting reports within an hour of each other. On the subject of the Broncos, this is a case of the latter.

According to Fox Sports reporter James Hooper, the Broncos may have agreed to terms with Rabbitohs coach Anthony Seibold to take over their head coaching position in 2020, with Hooper describing the deal as “done”.

Which would be great. Except that shortly afterwards, The Courier-Mail reported that the Broncos are in “secret talks” with Michael Maguire about taking over the head coaching role, with current coach Wayne Bennett to move into the front office (and yes, that’s the same Michael Maguire who was yesterday linked to the Sea Eagles gig).

In short, we have no idea what’s going on. But we sure do love a little News-on-News crime.

Broncos keep Opacic

August 8, 2018, 1:55 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

The Broncos have today announced the re-signing of young centre Tom Opacic for a further two years, keeping him at the club until the end of 2020.

The Broncos also announced a two-year extension for Gehamat Shibasaki, who’ll make his debut for Brisbane on Thursday night.

Opacic has played 19 first grade games for the Broncos.
