Dragons, Titans chasing Oates

September 13, 2018, 10:39 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

It’s somewhat unusual these days for a representative star to finish his contract without his next one lined up, but that’s exactly what Corey Oates has done.

With the Broncos eliminated, Oates now must turn his attention to where he’ll play in 2019, and it’s looking decreasing likely that it’ll be in Brisbane.

According to the Courier-Mail, Oates has confirmed that he’s received interest from the Dragons and Titans, while adding that he “wouldn’t want to re-sign with the Broncs of Wayne’s not there”.

With coach Wayne Bennett no certainty to return next year, that naturally brings Oates’ future at the club into question.

If there’s a positive for the Broncos, it’s that Bennett’s future may not be clarified for some time, but Oates will surely want to sign a contract sooner rather than later. If he stays on the assumption that Bennett will remain, then what Bennett ultimately does is probably irrelevant.

Oates has played 120 first grade games for the Broncos, and 5 Origins for Queensland.

The Storm have estimated that their injured trio of Suliasi Vunivalu, Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Brandon Smith will all miss the final two rounds of the regular season.

Storm centre Will Chambers is facing a three-week ban, due to a crusher tackle on Eels star Jarryd Hayne.

Despite not yet having received an offer from Brisbane, Broncos winger Corey Oates has reportedly attracted the attention of the Bulldogs.

Former Dragons CEO Brian Johnston is set to return to the position as part of a change in ownership and leadership at the joint-venture club.

Warriors five-eighth Blake Green and centre Gerard Beale are both in doubt for their clash with the Panthers, due to a corked calf and hamstring strain, respectively.

In more positive news for the Warriors, coach Stephen Kearney is reportedly in talks with the club for an extension.

Roosters captain Boyd Cordner could be in trouble with the judiciary due to a lifting tackle on Raiders forward Luke Bateman.

The Roosters are reportedly interested in luring Storm five-eighth Cameron Munster to Bondi as a replacement for half Cooper Cronk when he eventually retires.

There are concerns that injured Cowboys prop Jordan McLean may not return this year, as he struggles to make a return from a foot injury.

Panthers coach Anthony Griffin has confirmed star halfback Nathan Cleary will make an early return from injury on Thursday night against the Tigers – just in time to press his claims for Origin selection.

Opposition teams are reportedly sounding out the Bulldogs about potentially poaching Moses Mbye or David Klemmer, as the Bulldogs’ salary cap crunch takes hold.

Warriors halfback Mason Lino will require scans on a possible high-ankle sprain, suffered in his team’s loss to the Roosters.

Titans coach Garth Brennan has told reporters that while he would like to retain prop Jarrod Wallace, “if someone doesn’t want to be here… they can leave“.

Storm skipper Cameron Smith faces a two-week suspension for a “wishbone” tackle on former teammate Kevin Proctor (which is likely to see Proctor miss time with a groin injury), while teammate Sam Kasiano faces a one-match ban for “dangerous contact” on Wallace.

The Titans are likely to be without lock Keegan Hipgrave for a while, after he played on with a broken left wrist, against the Storm.

Broncos coach Wayne Bennett has called on the NRL to crack down on time-wasting, before worrying about a potential reduction in the number of interchanges.

Broncos winger Corey Oates reportedly won’t be signing any potential new deal until his agreement with his current management company expires in August.

Finally on Brisbane, second-rower Alex Glenn will miss 2-6 weeks, after suffering an MCL injury in their loss to the Sea Eagles.

Speaking of Manly, they’re expected to finally secure Sharks halfback Trent Hodkinson this week, on a potential one-and-a-half year deal.

Raiders five-eighth Blake Austin will require scans this week to determine the severity of ankle injury suffered in his team’s loss to the Sharks.

Rabbitohs interested in Papalii

March 21, 2018, 1:21 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Having lost second-rower Angus Crichton to the Roosters for next year, the Rabbitohs are aiming big in their quest to replace him. Really big.

According to Nathan Ryan on Fox Sports, the Rabbitohs have held preliminary discussions with the management of Raiders forward Josh Papalii, in the hopes of luring the Raiders wrecking-ball to South Sydney next year.

The report indicates that the Rabbitohs have yet to formally table an offer, and that Papalii may be just one of several edge forwards of interest to South Sydney.

Storm second-rower Felise Kaufusi is also named as a possible option, as is Broncos winger Corey Oates.

Papalii has played 151 first grade games for the Raiders, 9 Origins for Queensland, 9 Tests for Australia, and 4 for Samoa.

Souths and Storm looking at Oates

March 13, 2018, 10:48 am By Joel Leave a Comment

Broncos winger Corey Oates wants to play in the back row. Wayne Bennett says that if that’s where he chooses to play, he’ll have to go back to reserve grade when everyone’s available. Oates is off-contract at season’s end. We’re sure you can see where this is going.

According to 7Sport, both the Rabbitohs and Storm have expressed interest in recruiting Oates – to play in the second row.

The opportunity to play as a second rower is critical here for two reasons.

Firstly, because at this point, it’s well established that that’s the position he’d prefer to play.

And secondly, because second-rowers are worth more money than wingers.

It’s rumoured that Oates may get an opportunity to play second row this week as a result of the suspension of Jaydn Su’a, so maybe he can change Bennett’s mind.

Oates has played 97 first grade games for the Broncos, and 4 Origins for Queensland.
