Pay linked to Warrington job

September 14, 2017, 8:01 am By Joel Leave a Comment

If the Bulldogs are actually planning to sack Des Hasler, they’d best get on with it, or they may find they’re left with no decent options to replace him with.

According to 7Sport, Super League club Warrington are scouring the Australian rugby league landscape in the hunt for a new coach, with Bulldogs favourite Dean Pay believed to be on the list, along with Rabbitohs assistant David Furner, and Panthers assistant Garth Brennan.

The report indicates that Pay – who’s believed to be the favourite for the Bulldogs gig, if it becomes available – would accept the job at Warrington if it were offered, as he seeks to progress his career.

Former Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire had been the early favourite for the job, but it’s believed his preference is to remain in Sydney.

So at least he should still be available, if the Bulldogs ever make a decision.

Brennan firming for Titans job

September 5, 2017, 9:12 am By Joel Leave a Comment

After Maroons coach Kevin Walters yesterday declared that he won’t pursue the vacant Titans head coaching position, somebody else had to fill the void as the new favourite. Step right up, Garth Brennan.

According to WWOS’ Mole, Panthers ISP coach Brennan is firming as a serious contender for the job, after meeting with Titans players last week at Coolangatta.

According to the report, Brennan has the support of star halfback Ash Taylor, and could potentially take Panthers five-eighth Matt Moylan with him, if he gets the nod.

It makes sense for Brennan to be a favourite for the position, having served a long, successful apprenticeship at Penrith and Newcastle, and being highly regarded around the NRL.

The Moylan part of the story makes a bit less sense though. For a start, how would the Titans fit Moylan into a 2018 salary cap with Jarryd Hayne? And secondly, if Penrith were to grant Moylan a release, surely they’d rather accept the reported swap offer for James Maloney, rather than send Moylan to the Titans for nothing.

Then again, this is the modern NRL. Not much would surprise us any more.

Kidwell finally gets a coaching staff

August 10, 2017, 1:38 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

It took a while, and multiple rejections, but Kiwis coach David Kidwell has finally managed to fill his coaching staff for the upcoming Rugby League World Cup.

According to 7Sport, polarizing former Roosters, Knights, Eels and Dragons coach Brian Smith has been appointed as coaching supervisor, while Panthers ISP NSW Cup coach Garth Brennan has been appointed Kidwell’s assistant.

Brennan is highly regarded as a future NRL coach-in-waiting. His Panthers side is currently coming 3rd.

Smith has over 600 matches of NRL coaching experience, and is known for rapid transformations in rebuilding clubs, as well as for thinking that Luke Burt was better than Clint Schifcofske.
