Peachey looking to backflip on Titans

August 23, 2018, 11:41 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

The Panthers are beginning to get a bit of a reputation for ignoring other teams’ contracts.

According to Channel 7, Panthers utility Tyrone Peachey is reportedly getting cold feet over his commitment to head to the Titans next year, with his management exploring the possibility of a backflip.

The major sticking point here is the same one that caused all the Ivan Cleary drama – specifically, he has a contract with another club, who are under no obligation to release him.

If the Titans were to release Peachey, they’d likely be wanting something in return – like Panthers five-eighth James Maloney, for example.

Word broke late last week that Maloney was keen to head to England in 2020, and that’s been followed up with a story on Channel 9 tonight that Maloney is being shopped around by the Panthers.

Given Maloney’s excellent form for the Panthers earlier in the year, it’s somewhat surprising that Penrith would be actively looking to move him on so soon; but after the emergence of the younger (and cheaper) Jarome Luai, the Panthers may feel that Maloney’s money could be better spent elsewhere (like on re-signing Origin halfback Nathan Cleary, for example).

That’s a lot of moving parts, but if the Panthers have shown anything of late, it’s that they won’t let a few contracts stand in their way.

Peachey has played 112 first grade games for the Panthers and Sharks, and 3 Origins for New South Wales.

2019 could be Maloney’s last at Penrith

August 16, 2018, 5:06 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

It’s probably too early to be starting rumours for 2020, but given the potential repercussions to the Panthers’ salary cap, this one might be relevant.

According to the Western Weekender, Panthers five-eighth James Maloney has spoken privately to the club about his desire to finish his career in England or France, and the Panthers are happy to facilitate that move in 2020.

This could be particularly handy for Penrith, if they’re to successfully re-sign halfback Nathan Cleary to an upgraded long-term deal.

Cleary himself comes off contract at the end of 2019, and should Maloney move on, it could save the Panthers from having two highly-paid halves on the books at once, and with give the club more financial flexibility to pay Cleary whatever it takes to keep him at the foot of the mountains.

Maloney has played 222 first grade games for the Panthers, Sharks, Roosters, Warriors and Storm, 12 Origins for New South Wales, and 3 Tests for Australia.

The immediate future of Broncos coach Wayne Bennett is up in the air, after the Broncos board reportedly decided not to renew his contract.

Cowboys forward Jason Taumalolo is facing a one-week ban for a shoulder charge.

Knights coach Nathan Brown has denied that the club is in talks with English Test star George Williams, despite reports linking him to the club.

Rabbitohs fullback Alex Johnston is expected to miss time due to a hamstring injury suffered early in his side’s loss to the Roosters.

Panthers forward Jack Hetherington is facing two weeks on the sideline, after being charged with a high shot on Titans utility AJ Brimson.

Panthers boss Phil Gould will remain at Penrith for a while yet, with it being reported that he’s recommitted to the club until 2023.

Finally on Penrith, five-eighth James Maloney will require scans to determine the severity of a knee injury suffered during their comeback win over the Titans.

In addition to beating the Bulldogs, the Sea Eagles had further good news on Saturday, signing Titans five-eighth Kane Elgey for the next two seasons.

On the other hand, Sea Eagles coach Trent Barrett has reportedly sent a legal letter to the club, demanding that deficiencies in the football department be addressed.

Dragons fans will have their fingers crossed for five-eighth Gareth Widdop, after he suffered a dislocated shoulder during their flogging from the Eels.

The career of Storm backrower Ryan Hoffman may be over, after he suffered a potentially major hamstring injury during their loss to the Sharks.

The Panthers may finally be nearing some injury relief, with star players James Maloney, Nathan Cleary, Tyrone Peachey and Josh Mansour all expected back next week.

The Sharks are expected to meet with the NRL’s best winger Valentine Holmes this week about a potential $3.2 million dollar, four-year contract extension.

Knights centre Sione Mata’utia will require scans on Monday after he suffered a possible fractured eye socket during his side’s win over the Eels.

Having already lost centre Josh Morris to the Sharks next year, the Bulldogs could also see his brother Brett walk out the door, with the latter linked to a return to the Dragons.

The immediate playing future of Raiders centre Jarrod Croker is in doubt, due a dislocated knee suffered during his side’s win over the Cowboys.

The Raiders released a statement critical of the NRL’s “perplexing” decision to extend the suspension of fullback Jack Wighton from six weeks to ten.

With their season now effectively over, Cowboys coach Paul Green has hinted at the possibility of blooding young players as they look toward the future.

The Broncos’ forward depth could be tested next week, with second-rower Jaydn Su’a and prop Joe Ofahengaue both failing to finish their loss to the Warriors due to ankle injuries.

Tigers edge forward Chris Lawrence could be facing another stint on the sidelines, after he failed to finish his sides win due to a hamstring injury.

The new Western Sydney Stadium is expected to open on Easter Monday next year, with a clash between the Eels and Tigers.

NSW players have dominated the Kangaroos merit team, with 12 of the champion Blues named in the squad.

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga has thrown his support behind a push for Australia to play a Test against Tonga at the end of the NRL season.

The race for the Blues halves spots are believed to be down to Panthers halves James Maloney and Nathan Cleary, and Roosters five-eighth Luke Keary, after Blues selectors finally realised that Mitchell Moses is terrible.

Prior to their loss on Friday night, the Eels released edge forward Kenny Edwards, who had been suspended indefinitely by the club, anyway.

The edge depth took a further hit during the game, with second-rower Beau Scott suffering a season-ending ACL injury.

The Broncos will have to get used to the absence of forward Payne Haas, who’s decided to have surgery on his injured shoulder, that will rule him out for an extended period.

The howler of a call to sin-bin Roosters forward Dylan Napa for a head clash (that turned the match) has been effectively proven wrong, with the Match Review Committee clearing Napa of any wrongdoing.

The Knights have been left counting the cost of their narrow loss to the Titans, losing forward Jacob Saifiti (up to 12 weeks) and half Brock Lamb (up to four weeks) to a fractured shoulder and fractured cheekbone, respectively.

The Rabbitohs took a few injuries out of their win over the Cowboys, with both forward Sam Burgess and fullback Alex Johnston failing to finish the game due to a glute strain and hamstring strain, respectively.

The Cowboys and Maroons will be breathing a little bit easier, with prop Matt Scott believed to have only suffered a Grade One MCL injury, which shouldn’t impact his availability for State of Origin (though whether or not his form warrants selection is debatable).

The abomination of a match between the Storm and Sea Eagles will have ramifications for both sides, with Sea Eagles hooker Api Korisau (1 week) and Storm centre Curtis Scott (2 weeks) both charged for striking.

Sea Eagles utility back Dylan Walker meanwhile, faces 3-6 weeks on the sidelines with a fractured eye socket, after being on the receiving end of the punches from Scott.

Bulldogs fans will be sweating on news about centre Josh Morris, who failed to finish his side’s loss due to a knee injury.

Blues coach Brad Fittler has stated that he hasn’t yet ruled out selecting Sharks forward Andrew Fifita for New South Wales, despite Fifita being unavailable for Game 2, due to being Tongan.

It’s been revealed that a $10,000 mural of former Kiwis coach David Kidwell will remain in place until October – meaning that the mural of Kidwell will last longer in its role than he did.
