Broncos re-sign Gillett

July 26, 2018, 10:16 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

He has hardly played this year due to injury, but Broncos second-rower Matt Gillett remains a huge part of their plans.

To that end, the Broncos this morning announced that they’ve re-signed Gillett for another four years, keeping him in Brisbane until the end of 2022.

The re-signing of Gillett, together with their recent retention of Jaydn Su’a, locks down the Broncos second row positions for the immediate future, and will only add to speculation that Alex Glenn could be headed to the Titans.

Gillett has played 183 first grade games for the Broncos, 18 Origins for Queensland, and 12 Tests for Australia.

Broncos re-sign Gillett

May 24, 2018, 10:57 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

If the Rabbitohs are hoping to replace departing second-rower Angus Crichton with an elite import, they’d want to get a wriggle on, as free agency’s top prospects are disappearing by the day.

After representative edge forwards Felise Kaufusi re-signed with the Storm this week, and Josh Papalii reportedly set to remain in Canberra, Broncos star Matt Gillett is the next to come off the market, after agreeing to an extension with the Broncos.

According to nrl.com, Gillett has agreed to an upgrade and extension that will see him remain in Brisbane until the end of 2022… and the Broncos aren’t done yet.

The same report indicates that the Broncos hope to make fellow edge forward Jaydn Su’a their next priority, despite the advances of South Sydney.

If they’re successful, the Broncos will have locked in the bulk of their forward pack for next year already – and leave the Rabbitohs scrambling for options.

Gillett has played 183 first grade games for the Broncos, 18 Origins for Queensland, and 12 Tests for Australia.

The Weekend Wrap: 15/4/18

April 16, 2018, 12:58 am By Joel Leave a Comment

Roosters forward Siosiua Taukeiaho will require further scans on Monday on a knee injury suffered in the pre-game warm-up, after earlier scans were inconclusive.

The Sharks will be without captain Paul Gallen for 4-6 weeks, after scans confirmed he suffered a Grade 2 MCL injury in his side’s loss to the Dragons.

In better news for Cronulla, Andrew Fifita, Wade Graham and Luke Lewis have all been cleared of major injuries, although all remain in doubt for this weekend’s clash with the Panthers.

Broncos second-rower Matt Gillett will miss up to 3 months of football, after it was revealed he’s been playing with a broken neck.

The Warriors have lost Solomone Kata for up to 4 weeks due to an ankle injury suffered in their first loss of the season.

Warriors second-rower Leivaha Pulu will need further assessment on his ankle injury though, but is also expected to miss some time.

The full extent of the Bulldogs’ salary cap woes have been revealed, with reports that the club have just $800,000 in cap space remaining for 2019, and 12 players off contract.

Panthers winger Josh Mansour appears set for an extended stint on the sidelines, after suffering a suspected fractured cheekbone in his side’s hammering of the Titans.

The Titans weren’t without their own issues though, with Nathan Peats failing to return after the 25th minute due to a rib injury.

The Denver Test between New Zealand and England remains on track to proceed, after a meeting with NRL CEOs and the RLPA this week.

The Fiji Bati will need to find a find a new head coach, after Mick Potter announced his resignation after four yeas in the role.

Melbourne have poached a collection of showpiece matches for coming years, including the 2019 All Stars game, a 2021 & 2025 Origin match, and a 2022 & 2023 Kangaroos Test match.

Film Study: The 2nd Man Play

July 5, 2016, 1:54 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

In the 2nd Man Play (pictured below being perfectly executed by Queensland in State of Origin 1), the objective is to isolate a particular defender and attract him to the lead runner, before passing to the 2nd man (hence the name) and in doing so, create an overlap on the outside. Let’s break it down piece by piece.
