The Weekend Wrap: 24/9/18

September 24, 2018, 12:39 am By Joel Leave a Comment

Storm skipper Cameron Smith has hinted at his potential retirement… if the Storm were to win the Grand Final.

The Storm are confident that five-eighth Cameron Munster will remain in Melbourne, with Storm boss Dave Donaghy saying that Munster has told them “he wants to stay“.

The career of Storm fullback Billy Slater may be over, after he was absurdly charged with a Grade One “shoulder charge” for his try-saving non-shoulder charge on Sharks winger Sosaia Feki – an infringement that carries a base penalty of two matches.

In contrast, Roosters hooker Jake Friend will be fine to play, assuming he submits an early guilty plea for a dangerous throw.

Halfback Cooper Cronk will be racing the clock to take his place in the decider, after scans revealed the former Melbourne star suffered a “severe left rotator cuff injury“.

The Panthers’ re-signing of halfback Nathan Cleary reportedly took place on Thursday – and does not include any sort of clause relating to his father, current Tigers coach Ivan Cleary.

The Sea Eagles have reportedly made an offer to former Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire to take the club’s head coaching gig when Trent Barrett eventually departs.

The Raiders are reportedly in discussions to bring Storm back-up half Ryley Jacks to the nation’s capital.

Cowboys prop Matt Scott will undergo neck surgery this week, in the hopes of avoiding medical retirement.

Broncos getting Seibold, unless they’re not

August 16, 2018, 4:31 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Sometimes, the mainstream media is total agreement about what’s going on (like Trent Barrett quitting the Sea Eagles). Other times, competing journalists release conflicting reports within an hour of each other. On the subject of the Broncos, this is a case of the latter.

According to Fox Sports reporter James Hooper, the Broncos may have agreed to terms with Rabbitohs coach Anthony Seibold to take over their head coaching position in 2020, with Hooper describing the deal as “done”.

Which would be great. Except that shortly afterwards, The Courier-Mail reported that the Broncos are in “secret talks” with Michael Maguire about taking over the head coaching role, with current coach Wayne Bennett to move into the front office (and yes, that’s the same Michael Maguire who was yesterday linked to the Sea Eagles gig).

In short, we have no idea what’s going on. But we sure do love a little News-on-News crime.

Maguire tipped for Sea Eagles gig

August 15, 2018, 8:48 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Trent Barrett‘s seat isn’t even cold yet, but that doesn’t mean that plans aren’t afoot to appoint his replacement.

According to Fox Sports, former Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire is expected to be appointed Manly’s next head coach, whenever Barrett’s resignation is officially confirmed.

The report suggests that Maguire – who’s currently working as head coach of the Kiwis – is “all but guaranteed” to land the job.

Given that Maguire’s previous NRL head coaching experience came at the Rabbitohs – one of the game’s most professional clubs – it’ll be interesting to see how he finds the working conditions that Barrett found unacceptable.

Maguire has coached 153 NRL games for the Rabbitohs, with a career winning percentage of 55.6%.

Maguire confirmed as new Kiwis coach

May 11, 2018, 12:51 am By Joel Leave a Comment

The Kiwis have finally got their man (and no, we’re not talking about Jason Taumalolo).

According to the New Zealand Herald, the Kiwis today officially announced the signing of former Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire as their new head coach.

Maguire has signed on through the 2021 Rugby League World Cup.

Maguire coached the Rabbitohs for six seasons, winning the NRL Grand Final in 2014.

Maguire keen on Bulldogs job

September 21, 2017, 3:00 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

If the Bulldogs miss out on Dean Pay for their head coaching job, there’s at least one highly accomplished first grade coach ready to step up.

According to 7Sport, former Rabbitohs coach Michael Maguire is keen for a shot at the Bulldogs gig, in order to keep his family in Sydney.

Nonetheless, Maguire has also interviewed with Super League club Warrington – the same club linked to fellow Bulldogs coaching candidate, Pay.

Should Pay ultimately get the Warrington job, Maguire would firm as a potential option at Canterbury; while if Pay were to get the Bulldogs job, Maguire would still have the Warrington gig as a fallback option.

A decision on Pay’s future is expected within the next week, and from there, the dominoes should begin to fall.

One way or another, it’s looking like Pay’s about to get a crack as a head coach; we just don’t know where yet.
