Titans coach Henry sacked: reports

August 21, 2017, 3:30 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

UPDATE 21/7 @ 3:56pm: Henry’s sacking has been officially confirmed on nrl.com.

The tenure of Neil Henry as coach of the Titans is reportedly over, with multiple outlets reporting that he’s been given his marching orders.

Titans boss Graham Annesley will face the media at 3:45pm, at which point he’s expected to confirm the dismissal.

News leaked last night that the NRL had given the required approval for the Titans to pay out the remainder of Henry’s deal, and it would appear that the Titans have wasted no time in terminating the contract.

Speculation will now turn to who’ll take over the reins, with Maroons coach Kevin Walters one early name mentioned.

NRL approves Henry sacking, Walters possible option

August 21, 2017, 3:24 am By Joel Leave a Comment

Titans coach Neil Henry appears to be in his final days (hours?) as coach of the Gold Coast, with the NRL reportedly giving the go-ahead for the club to give him his marching orders.

According to Courier-Mail reporter Pete Badel, Henry’s exit will be officially decided at a board meeting in the coming days, and Maroons coach Kevin Walters is looming as an early option to win the job for 2018.

“The NRL own the Titans’ license; the Titans need the approval, financially, of the NRL bean-counters to make any transactions,” Badel told Fox Sports.

“The NRL has given the green light to pay out Neil Henry.”

As to his potential replacement, Badel added that, “I’m hearing that Kevin Walters is firming as a possible candidate.”

“The QRL have tonight told me that they won’t stand in the way of Kevin Walters taking the Titans job of he wants it.”

It’s probably poor etiquette to do too much speculating on Henry’s replacement before he’s actually been removed; not only is the body still warm, it’s also still employed.

No doubt the rumours will pick up once the spot is actually available, with the Titans’ imminent vacancy to be the only available head coaching gig in the NRL (for now..?).

Titans’ studs won’t re-sign with Henry as coach: report

August 17, 2017, 2:54 am By Joel Leave a Comment

According to AAP, News Corp are reporting that the Titans halves-of-the-future, Ash Taylor and Kane Elgey, won’t re-sign with the club as long as head coach Neil Henry remains in charge.

Sound familiar? It should – essentially the same report came out of the Tigers five months ago, and that situation resolved itself with Jason Taylor getting sacked, and three of the four not re-signing anyway.

Ultimately, if Monday’s report that Henry is set to be fired is true, then that’s all academic anyway.

Meanwhile, Daily Telegraph reporter Paul Kent has told NRL 360 that the real reason that Taylor could leave the Titans is that he and Tyrone Roberts share a manager, and the manager is miffed that Roberts was offered a contract, and that offer has since been withdrawn. (Does that sound familiar? It should – the Tigers’ off-contract players all share the same manager, and they ultimately lost three quarters of them after offering Mitch Moses a contract and subsequently withdrawing it.)

However this all plays out, it’s nice to know that we’ve finally gotten all the way through 2017’s stories, and apparently we’re starting back at the beginning again.

Titans rumoured to be planning to sack Henry

August 14, 2017, 6:50 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

With no formal resolution expected for another week, you can expect plenty of speculation as to how the Jarryd Hayne vs Neil Henry drama will be resolved over the coming days. For their part, The Daily Telegraph have gotten in first, reporting that Hayne is the victor, and Henry is likely to be terminated following their Round 24 clash with the Eels.

According to their report, the Titans board have deemed the situation untenable, and the deciding factor in who remains is likely to be money. It will cost the club $400,000 to pay out Henry; it would cost three times that to pay out Hayne.

It remains to be seen if the report is accurate, but if somebody needs to be moved on, the option that saves the club $800,000 is probably the best one.

Hayne-Henry meeting adjourned, no decision made

August 14, 2017, 5:38 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

The much anticipated meeting between Titans’ star Jarryd Hayne, coach Neil Henry, and the Titans board has adjourned, but with no outcome as yet.

Titans CEO Graham Annesley and chairperson Rebecca Frizelle fronted the media at the conclusion of the board meeting, to announce that no decision has been made, nor is one expected prior to the Titans’ Round 24 clash on Thursday.

It was indicated that a resolution is anticipated by next week, after the Titans board has time to fully consider “the options available”.
