Peachey looking to backflip on Titans

August 23, 2018, 11:41 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

The Panthers are beginning to get a bit of a reputation for ignoring other teams’ contracts.

According to Channel 7, Panthers utility Tyrone Peachey is reportedly getting cold feet over his commitment to head to the Titans next year, with his management exploring the possibility of a backflip.

The major sticking point here is the same one that caused all the Ivan Cleary drama – specifically, he has a contract with another club, who are under no obligation to release him.

If the Titans were to release Peachey, they’d likely be wanting something in return – like Panthers five-eighth James Maloney, for example.

Word broke late last week that Maloney was keen to head to England in 2020, and that’s been followed up with a story on Channel 9 tonight that Maloney is being shopped around by the Panthers.

Given Maloney’s excellent form for the Panthers earlier in the year, it’s somewhat surprising that Penrith would be actively looking to move him on so soon; but after the emergence of the younger (and cheaper) Jarome Luai, the Panthers may feel that Maloney’s money could be better spent elsewhere (like on re-signing Origin halfback Nathan Cleary, for example).

That’s a lot of moving parts, but if the Panthers have shown anything of late, it’s that they won’t let a few contracts stand in their way.

Peachey has played 112 first grade games for the Panthers and Sharks, and 3 Origins for New South Wales.

2019 could be Maloney’s last at Penrith

August 16, 2018, 5:06 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

It’s probably too early to be starting rumours for 2020, but given the potential repercussions to the Panthers’ salary cap, this one might be relevant.

According to the Western Weekender, Panthers five-eighth James Maloney has spoken privately to the club about his desire to finish his career in England or France, and the Panthers are happy to facilitate that move in 2020.

This could be particularly handy for Penrith, if they’re to successfully re-sign halfback Nathan Cleary to an upgraded long-term deal.

Cleary himself comes off contract at the end of 2019, and should Maloney move on, it could save the Panthers from having two highly-paid halves on the books at once, and with give the club more financial flexibility to pay Cleary whatever it takes to keep him at the foot of the mountains.

Maloney has played 222 first grade games for the Panthers, Sharks, Roosters, Warriors and Storm, 12 Origins for New South Wales, and 3 Tests for Australia.

Panthers rumoured to be after Ivan

August 6, 2018, 8:19 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Tigers fans hoping to see Nathan Cleary play for his father may soon get their wish; but perhaps not in the way that they’d hoped.

According to the Western Weekender, the Panthers have already begun pursuing Tigers coach Ivan Cleary, with “sources close to the Tigers” saying that the move is “a legitimate possibility”.

Should the Panthers be successful, it would all but ensure the retention of Nathan, and put a huge dent in the impressive rebuild that Ivan has already begun at Wests.

There’s surely still a long way to go before the Panthers coaching job is settled, but this is indeed how it plays out, it’d be one heck of a story.

Cleary has coached 291 first grade games for the Tigers, Panthers and Warriors, with a 47.1% career winning percentage.

Panthers terminate Griffin

August 6, 2018, 4:46 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

In the most surprising non-surprise imaginable, the Panthers have today ended the tenure of coach Anthony Griffin, with their board reportedly informing him that his services won’t be required beyond this season.

According to nrl.com, Griffin may then opt to walk away immediately, with Cameron Ciraldo expected to take over as caretaker coach.

Depending on who you ask, this is either a giant surprise, or no surprise at all.

On one hand, Griffin has reportedly been on the nose at Penrith for some time, with speculation on his future dating back to last season, and continuing to build throughout this year.

On the other, the Panthers are currently sitting in a share of 4th spot on the ladder, and including this year, will have made the finals for three consecutive seasons.

The report indicates that the decision was made because the board believes that Griffin is incapable of leading the squad to a premiership.

Whether that’s true or not we may never know, but if nothing else it shows that nothing less than excellence is acceptable at the Panthers.

Griffin has coached 173 first grade games for the Panthers and Broncos, with a career winning percentage of 55.5%.

Panthers keep Kikau

July 18, 2018, 3:45 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Having watched Fijian bulldozer Viliame Kikau develop into the NRL’s most destructive forward not named Jason Taumalolo, the Panthers have decided to lock him down long term.

The Panthers today announced the re-signing of Kikau for the next four years, keeping the emerging superstar until the end of 2022.

Kikau is the second Panther to pledge his long-term future to Penrith in recent weeks (after Reagan Campbell-Gillard signed on until 2024), and no doubt they’ll be hoping it’s a trend that Nathan Cleary will soon follow.

Kikau has played 25 first grade games for the Panthers, 8 Tests for Fiji, and is an absolute weapon.
