Dragons in talks to extend McGregor

September 25, 2018, 5:10 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Having developed an unfortunate of habit of late-season fadeouts, it was rumoured that Dragons coach Paul McGregor would need that to change in 2018 in order to secure an extension. Not so, apparently.

According to WWOS reporter The Mole, the Dragons are in talks with McGregor for a contract extension, despite yet another poor end to the season.

Yes, they managed to win a finals game, but is that enough to erase the memory of losing 6 of their last 9; of their 40-4 flogging from the Eels; of being shutout in a 38-0 spanking from the Bulldogs; or of whatever the heck happened against the Rabbitohs? In this particular case, it appears that the answer is ‘yes’.

If this wasn’t a poor finish to the season, we’d hate to see what was.

Dragons keep Pereira

September 19, 2018, 4:11 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

While the Dragons were caught up in their annual slide through the second half of the season, there were relatively few things for Dragons fans to feel good about.

One highlight from that period though was the emergence of winger Jordan Pereira who broke out into a genuine attacking weapon during a time when many of his teammates were struggling for form.

Appropriately, Pereira has been rewarded for his form, with the Dragons today announcing his retention on a new two-year deal until the end of 2020.

With long-time winger Jason Nightingale retiring, Dragons fans can relax knowing that their flanks are in safe hands.

Pereira has played 9 first grade games for the Dragons since making his debut in Round 19.

Dragons, Titans chasing Oates

September 13, 2018, 10:39 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

It’s somewhat unusual these days for a representative star to finish his contract without his next one lined up, but that’s exactly what Corey Oates has done.

With the Broncos eliminated, Oates now must turn his attention to where he’ll play in 2019, and it’s looking decreasing likely that it’ll be in Brisbane.

According to the Courier-Mail, Oates has confirmed that he’s received interest from the Dragons and Titans, while adding that he “wouldn’t want to re-sign with the Broncs of Wayne’s not there”.

With coach Wayne Bennett no certainty to return next year, that naturally brings Oates’ future at the club into question.

If there’s a positive for the Broncos, it’s that Bennett’s future may not be clarified for some time, but Oates will surely want to sign a contract sooner rather than later. If he stays on the assumption that Bennett will remain, then what Bennett ultimately does is probably irrelevant.

Oates has played 120 first grade games for the Broncos, and 5 Origins for Queensland.

Latimore re-signs with Dragons

August 16, 2018, 4:45 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

One of the game’s most underrated forwards will be sticking around for another year, with Dragons forward Jeremy Latimore signing on for another season.

Latimore’s new deal will see him remain in the Red Vee until the end of 2019.

Latimore had previously hinted at the possibility of retirement if he couldn’t secure a new deal at the Dragons, but with Latimore demonstrating his value in the absence of Origin forward Paul Vaughan, the Dragons were evidently happy to keep him around for veteran depth.

Latimore has played 159 first grade games for the Dragons, Sharks, Panthers, Warriors and Eels.

Nightingale hangs em up

August 10, 2018, 12:14 am By Joel Leave a Comment

Another popular rugby league legend has decided to call it a day, with Dragons winger Jason Nightingale announcing his retirement at season’s end.

The “awkward-looking thing” is the last remaining member of the Dragons’ 2010 premiership-winning team, and will end his career a rare one-club man.

Nightingale played 265 first grade games for the Dragons, and 33 Tests for New Zealand.
