Roberts returns to Titans

August 10, 2018, 12:19 am By Joel Leave a Comment

As expected, the Titans have announced the signing of utility Tyrone Roberts on a two-year deal, which will see him return to the Gold Coast until the end of 2020.

Roberts was in sparkling touch as a fullback prior to heading to England, but will have some competition for that spot now, with both current custodian Michael Gordon and new signing Tyrone Peachey on deck.

Wherever he ends up playing, he’ll certainly add a bit of attacking spark and versatility to a rapidly improving squad.

Roberts has played 138 first grade games for the Titans and Knights.

Titans bringing back Roberts

June 18, 2018, 1:37 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

One of the Titans more baffling retention decisions of recent seasons is about to be reversed.

According to WWOS reporter The Mole, former Titans utility Tyrone Roberts has agreed to re-join the club, despite being let go at the end of last season.

The report indicates that Roberts has suffered home-sickness during his time at Warrington, and if he can secure an early release, could even be brought in prior to the June 30 deadline.

The decision not to retain Roberts was odd in the first place, given his utility value, and the excellent form he was in after being thrust into the fullback role last year.

Both the Titans and the NRL itself will be better off for having Roberts back.

Roberts has played 138 NRL matches for the Titans and Knights.

Titans’ Roberts expected to stay in 2018

August 28, 2017, 1:54 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

He’s been linked to a play from the Tigers, where he’d be asked to fill a utility role, but Titans utility half Tyrone Roberts is expected to stay put, and try to earn the Titans’ number 6 jersey from Kane Elgey.

According to nrl.com, the Titans and Roberts have re-opened negotiations, with a new deal now appearing to be the most likely outcome.

“I want to [stay],” Roberts said. “We’re in talks now, so hopefully we’ll get it done in a couple of weeks.”

After being asked to fill a variety of positions during 2017, Roberts was open to moving on if he could secure a starting role somewhere next year. With that not having eventuated – and Roberts with having earned the opportunity to start next to Ash Taylor in recent weeks – he now appears likely to remain on the Gold Coast.

Tigers interested in Titan Roberts

August 2, 2017, 11:21 am By Joel Leave a Comment

With Titans utility Tyrone Roberts still yet to commit to the Gold Coast for 2018, it was only a matter of time before another NRL club came sniffing around to try and pry him away. As it turns out, the Tigers may be that team.

According to Fox Sports, the Tigers are “considering making a play” for Roberts, reportedly viewing him as the perfect bench utility.

Whether or not their eventual offer would be enough to lure him from the Titans remains to be seen – he’s already had an offer to remain on the Gold Coast as a utility on the table since June, and has reportedly been holding out in the hope of being offered a starting gig somewhere. Unless the money is substantially better, you’d imagine he might as well stay where he is if the role is the same (though admittedly, if he fancies himself a chance of unseating a member of the Tigers spine, you couldn’t blame him).

It remains surprising to us that nobody has yet been willing to offer Roberts a starting spot in the halves (he’d be an immediate upgrade at the Warriors or Knights, for example), but if nothing else, the Tigers’ interest should at least improve his leverage.

Roberts has played 134 first grade games for the Titans and Knights.

Henry hopeful of re-signing Taylor this year

July 18, 2017, 3:16 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Despite the Broncos re-signing Kodi Nikorima yesterday – and in doing so, casting doubt on rumours of their interest in Titans halfback Ash Taylor – the Titans still don’t want to take any chances with their young star.

According to AAP, Titans coach Neil Henry has said that he doesn’t care who the Broncos sign; he just wants Taylor re-signed as soon as possible, hopefully “this year”.

“I really don’t care who they sign up there, all I know is that he’s signed here until the end of next year, and there’s been noise of him going to various places,” Henry said. “But he, and Kane (Elgey) the same, we see them as long term partners in the halves at this club.”

“Hopefully we can strike a deal this year for an extension for Ash. He just bought a house and is quite settled here.”

It can be inferred from Henry’s statement that the club doesn’t envisage utility Tyrone Roberts as a solution in the halves, casting some doubt over his future as he sits on an offer from the Titans, in the hopes of securing a starting spot elsewhere.

That said, it’s conceivably possible that the Titans could re-sign him with a view to starting him at fullback once the contract of Jarryd Hayne expires at the end of next year.

Taylor and Roberts have built a successful little combination at the scrum-base lately, and if the Titans are able to retain them both, as well as Elgey, the future will look very bright indeed for the Gold Coast club.

Taylor has played 40 first grade games for the Titans and Broncos.
