Panthers offer Cleary coaching job from 2021

September 19, 2018, 4:03 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Well that didn’t take long.

After the Panthers reportedly closed in on signing halfback Nathan Cleary on Monday, it was expected speculation on the future of his father, Ivan, would soon follow.

Now, SMH is reporting that the Panthers have indeed offered Cleary Senior their head coaching job – from 2021.

Cynically, this offer could be viewed as a path towards getting Ivan on board for next season, despite the Tigers having already refused his release. Should Ivan accept the Panthers’ offer, it would put the squeeze on the Tigers to either release him, or effectively squander two years of potential rebuild, by keeping a lame duck head coach with a foot out the door.

The question then becomes who has the leverage. With the Panthers having already sacked Anthony Griffin, the Tigers could bluff that they’re happy to stay the course with Cleary, in the hopes of getting compensation from Penrith.

Perhaps to that end then, the Panthers board today endorsed caretaker head coach Cameron Ciraldo to stay on in the job next year, according to nrl.com.

In effect, the Panthers have sent a message to the Tigers of ‘if you want to hamstring your club for two years, go for it; we’re happy with Ciraldo’.

If the Tigers believe the Panthers won’t pay them a cent, the decision over whether or not to release Cleary becomes purely about what’s best for the football team, and by that measure, few would agree that delaying the appointment of a new coach and new direction would be beneficial.

In that case, the Panthers could end up getting exactly what they wanted for nothing.

Of course, Cleary may yet reject the Panthers’ offer. But if he accepts it, this high-stakes game of poker has the potential to work out poorly for both sides of they’re not careful.

Tigers to sign Matterson

September 6, 2018, 12:12 pm By Joel 2 Comments

The first year of the Tigers’ rebuild went a lot better than most expected, but there’s still plenty of work to be done.

Signing a young, highly regarded edge forward will be a huge step in the right direction, and that’s reportedly what they’ve done.

According to WWOS reporter The Mole, Wests have won the race to secure upcoming Roosters second-rower Ryan Matterson, who’s said to be “poised to sign a two-year deal”.

The nephew of Broncos legend Terry Matterson, Ryan will not only add a bit of starch out wide, but also adds utility value, having also played in the centres and halves during his time in the top grade.

Matterson has played 57 first grade games for the Roosters.

Farah going around again in 2019

August 29, 2018, 12:56 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Say what you like about Tigers hooker Robbie Farah, but he sure his resilient.

Despite having been seemingly on his way out of the NRL in his previous tenure at Wests, before again being stuck in reserve grade at the Rabbitohs, Farah has once again fought his way back to relevancy, and been rewarded with a new deal.

According to SMH reporter Danny Weidler, Farah has agreed to terms on a new one-year deal with the Tigers, extending his career into a 17th season.

It was widely assumed when Farah rejoined the Tigers mid-season on a 6-month deal, that it was likely to be just one last hurrah at the club where he made his name.

Instead, Farah immediately reinvigorated the club, sparking an immediate improvement in the side’s offense, and earning himself another season in the process.

Farah has played 281 first grade games for the Tigers and Rabbitohs, 16 Origins for New South Wales, 8 Tests for Australia, and 4 for Lebanon.

The club today announced the addition of Tigers forward Sauaso Sue on a two-year deal that will see him head to Belmore until the end of 2020.

Sue has played 113 first grade games for the Tigers, and 10 Tests for Samoa.

Panthers rumoured to be after Ivan

August 6, 2018, 8:19 pm By Joel Leave a Comment

Tigers fans hoping to see Nathan Cleary play for his father may soon get their wish; but perhaps not in the way that they’d hoped.

According to the Western Weekender, the Panthers have already begun pursuing Tigers coach Ivan Cleary, with “sources close to the Tigers” saying that the move is “a legitimate possibility”.

Should the Panthers be successful, it would all but ensure the retention of Nathan, and put a huge dent in the impressive rebuild that Ivan has already begun at Wests.

There’s surely still a long way to go before the Panthers coaching job is settled, but this is indeed how it plays out, it’d be one heck of a story.

Cleary has coached 291 first grade games for the Tigers, Panthers and Warriors, with a 47.1% career winning percentage.
